WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?

Learn more about the inspiration behind the piece

The design and the poetry draw inspiration from Colwyn Bay Pier’s history as a prominent social and music venue drawing big names from across the globe and the iconic posters which many remember from the 70s and 80s. Rhys’s poetry takes this playful spirit on board writing phrases inspired by the seagulls and birds that rule the streets of our seaside town (As well as making reference to the “Golden Goose” arcade which used to be on the pier) as well as the idea of the “infinite promontory” (The beloved pier itself which has taken on many forms through the years.). The digital elements as well as parts of the design also draw inspiration from the murals by Eric Ravilious and Mary Adsheads from 1934 which were a prominent feature for many years. The dinosaurs in the digital element are a nod to the beloved “Dinosaur World” which was mentioned more than a few times in our public consultation!
