WHAT DOES IT SAY?

CASTELL PAWB EI DŶ

EVERYONE’S CASTLE IS HIS HOME

WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?

Learn more about the inspiration behind the piece

The mural design, acting as a portal to the windy top of Conwy Mountain in our augmented reality experience, features images emblematic to Conwy, such as Jack Daws, the castle, foxgloves which were introduced to the UK via Queen Eleanor's castle garden, And a box containing signatures of many women from Conwy via the Women’s Peace petition 1924. Intertwined within these are other symbols and imagery submitted by the public.

The design style is paying homage to Rex Whistler's Trompe L'oeil (Trick of the eye) murals in Plas Newydd Anglesey, designed to look like it is carved into the stone. in keeping with the historic church. Once we enter the portal into the digital world, users can explore the top of a stylized Conwy Mountain, inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli art style. Hiyao visited Wales and took inspiration for the design of his ‘Castle in the Sky’, based on the book by the same name by Welsh author Dianna Wynn Jones.

In the distance you can see ‘Himeji Castle’ in Japan, which Conwy is twinned with. Our central phrase ‘Everyone’s castle is his house’ encompasses the pride of the Conwy residents.
